About Social and Emotional Health

At Children’s Institute, we are committed to strengthening the social and emotional health of children.

We know how important it is to support the whole child, and social and emotional health is the foundation for emerging cognitive abilities and human development. Socially and emotionally healthy children have stronger social and emotional skills and competencies. These skills allow children to enhance their ability to integrate their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in order to achieve success in life.

Social and emotional development affects how children relate to the world around them and how they interact with others. Children's social and emotional competencies are also linked to significant improvements in academic performance and attitudes about school as well as longer term outcomes like success in the work force.

Social and emotional skills include the ability to:
  • Identify and understand ones emotions
  • Set and achieve goals
  • Manage stress
  • Understand others' perspectives
  • Form positive relationships
  • Make good decisions
  • Identify and solve problems

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process to help children and adults develop strong social and emotional skills so they can become healthy, productive workers and engaged citizens.

Children with strong social and emotional skills often have:
  • Improved possibilities for school success
  • Reduced incidence of social isolation
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Lowered risk of negative body image
  • Reduced depressive symptoms
