Our Beginnings

In 1957, an innovative new program - Primary Mental Health Project - was launched in one urban elementary school in Rochester, New York. A joint partnership between the University of Rochester and the Rochester City School District, Primary Mental Health Project was the first school-based prevention program of its kind, and it was a tremendous success.

As that one program matured, research and development began on other prevention and early intervention programs and resource materials. We now have over 20 offerings that promote the social and emotional well-being of children and their families, as well as comprehensive evaluation services, available.

Staff include psychologists, an economist, a pediatrician, educators, social workers, business professionals, and experts in public policy. In addition, a creative and dedicated team of administrative and support staff focuses on organizational details, financial planning, communications and data analysis and processing. This diversity of educational backgrounds allows us to provide new and innovative solutions for real-life challenges facing our children.

Our commitment to prevention and ability to work well with others, are the key ingredients of our continued success.

Our Mission

The mission of Children's Institute is to strengthen children's social and emotional health.

Through sound research and evaluation, we develop and promote effective prevention and early intervention programs, materials and best practices for children, families, schools and communities.
