Early Literacy Project (ELP)
The ELP collaborative is developing a new early literacy program for parents and child care providers for children, ages six and under.
Four, 12-session educational modules and companion visual aids are slated for release in the fall of 2003.

The ELP collaborative has designed educational materials to promote language and literacy development in young children, ages 6 and under.
As the lead agency for ELP, Children's Institute oversees the project, administers funds, and facilitates the creation, review, and production processes.
Goals
- Promote language and literacy development in young children
- Develop materials and visual aids for home use
Primary Strategies
- Materials are developed by experts in education
- Materials are reviewed by community members such as parents, teachers, day care providers, and media representatives
- Materials are distributed to parents and child care providers
Benefits/Anticipated Outcomes
ELP anticipates that the creation and dissemination of its literacy modules and visual aids will increase the:
- Numbers of school-ready children in the community
- Sensitivity to the behaviors of children and adults related to early reading success
- Awareness of personal beliefs concerning children's literacy development
- Quantity and quality of research-based, literacy related interactions between adults and children
