Rochester Safe Start Picture

Rochester is one of eleven communities in the country funded by the U.S. Department of Justice to assess community needs and develop strategies to respond to young children's exposure to violence at home and in the community.

Rochester Safe Start is:

  • Creating a model of collaboration between public and private sectors
  • Focusing on children from birth to age six who have been exposed to violence
  • Promoting the changing of community attitudes
  • Expanding and enhancing services for young children and their families
  • Helping systems such as police, courts, probation, and child welfare to be more responsive to young children
  • Strengthening community capacity through evaluation and technical assistance
