All workshops are held at Children’s Institute except for the Saturday, March 14, 2009 session which will be held on the Nazareth campus. Presenters are affiliated with Children’s Institute or Nazareth College.
Price: $80.00 for full day workshop, $40.00 for evening workshops. Full time student and Nazareth adjunct faculty rate: $40.00 for full day, $20.00 for half day or evening. Lunch is on your own.

Let’s Play School…Play Therapy Interventions for School Age Children
Come fill up your professional backpack with a variety of practical play therapy interventions for use with school age children in both group and individual sessions. A combination of lecture, experiential activities and case examples will give participants the needed skills to successfully advocate for the “language of play therapy” in today’s school setting.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn at least four techniques for use with groups.
- Learn at least four techniques for use with individuals.
- Learn to link your play therapy language with educators’ language.
- Learn the challenges to be aware of in implementing play therapy in schools.

Play Therapy 101: The Basics of Working with Children
This workshop is designed for the beginner play therapist and will be centered on gaining a basic knowledge of the history and curative elements of Play Therapy, and common play therapy theories. We will explore the basic skills of building therapeutic relationships with children. The participant will leave with a beginning understanding of this modality and where to continue the learning journey.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn the history of play therapy.
- Learn the curative elements of play therapy
- Learn the basic skills of play therapy relationships
- Learn about the professional field of play therapy and resources available locally and nationally.

Child Centered Play Therapy: The Art of “Being With” a Child
Learn a way of being with children that builds a therapeutic relationship through their natural language of play. Learn to facilitate an appropriate expression of the feelings that often cause problematic behaviors, thereby reducing many of those behaviors. Begin to enter the child's world of play and learn to acknowledge and identify the feelings behind the behaviors. Learn to set therapeutic limits, structure the play session, and how to select appropriate toys and materials to promote the safety and growth of the child client. The goal will be for participants to gain an introduction and an interest in using Play Therapy in their work with children.
Learning objectives:
- Learn about the theoretical underpinnings of child-centered play therapy.
- Learn about toy selection and playroom set up.
- Learn the basic language and skills of child-centered play therapy.
- Learn about themes and stages in child-centered play therapy.
March 14, 2009 Saturday 9am - 4pm
Parents and Play Therapy: The Critical Dance (Nazareth College location)
Parents are vital to successful play therapy treatment. Through discussion and experiential activities we will explore why adults and particularly parents may be resistant and learn ways to actively engage them to benefit the play therapy process. Participants will learn about a continuum of involvement from active as in filial therapy to a less active role through homework and generalization assignments.
Learning objectives:
- Learn about the concept of resistance and to overcome parental resistance.
- Learn how to de-mystify the process of play therapy to educate and engage parents.
- Learn four homework assignments to help parents engage in the therapy.
- Learn about filial therapy and where to go for future training.

Parenting with Playfulness
Come learn about being a playful parent. Based on Jonathan Cohen’s book, “Playful Parenting”, participants with learn about connecting, building confidence, and resolving everyday problems through play. Come explore how to overcome obstacles in ourselves and the environment in order to parent more playfully and emotionally healthy.

Possibilities of Play: Building Connections
Together we will explore key issues in educating others about the importance of our work with children and play. The ability to articulate the value and importance of play to a variety of audiences will be explored. You will leave this fun and interactive workshop with an “elevator” speech to share with others…whether you are going to the third floor only or the top of Sears Tower in Chicago!
*General play evening workshops are not for APT credit and are open to parents, educators, child care providers, paraprofessionals and interested others.
Play therapy day workshops are for credit from the Association for Play Therapy. Each day workshop is for 5 APT credits.
Children’s Institute is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to play therapy. Our provider number is 05-164. Children’s Institute maintains responsibility for the program.
