Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention

After-school activities that focus on academic enrichment and the development of social skills can lead to reduced violence in the schools and in the community.

As managing partner of the New York State Education Department grant “Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention Program," Children’s Institute facilitates project activities, prepares and submits reports, and engages in other efforts to improve quality and reduce violence in the schools. Our work through the Greater Rochester After-School Alliance (GRASA) Assessment Partnership and Rochester Safe Start, a national demonstration project to reduce the impact on children exposed to violence, allows us to simultaneously address after-school quality and recognize the importance of violence prevention.

The Extended School Day/School Violence Prevention program supports school and community agency collaborations at four Rochester schools. The schools and their partners are: (1) Dr. Freddie Thomas High School and The Community Place, (2) Jefferson High School and the Society for the Protection and Care of Children (SPCC), (3) Madison-Wilson and SouthWest Area Neighborhood Association (SWAN), and (4) Charlotte High School and Hillside Children’s Center.
