Early Literacy
Early language development, literacy and emotional health of children go hand in hand. Long before babies babble or say their first word, they practice the skills necessary to learn how to talk and read. When parents and caregivers are sensitive to language learning they are able to provide the richest environment possible for the children in their care.
Children’s Institute partners with community agencies to deliver professional development in early literacy to group family child care providers, called the Partners in Family Child Care project, which is part of the City of Rochester’s Literacy Movement.
In 2000, the Early Literacy Project was developed, tested, and implemented in our community. Our work is based on best practices including work that was developed in collaboration with educators from Syracuse University. Parents and child care providers can access early literacy trainings today from our partnering agency, Rochester Hearing and Speech Center, or by taking our online literacy course.
