Stage of Change Approach

For Parenting and Early Education and Care

Make your work with parents and early educators even more effective

Resistance to change can be as constant as change itself. Children’s Institute can help you support change in attitudes and behaviors using a person-centered approach to meet learners where they are, while recognizing that resistance may be in the educator as well as in the learner.

The Stage of Change Approach for Parenting and Early Education and Care is a model that addresses personal and organizational change by offering strategies matched to the learner’s stage of “readiness to change.” The Stage of Change Approach incorporates cutting-edge theory and research, drawing on the Transtheoretical Model of Change, Self-Determination Theory, and Attachment Theory, and using proven communication models such as Motivational Interviewing, Nonviolent Communication, and group processes.

Children’s Institute offers these resources for applying the Stage of Change Approach in your work:

  • Training (8 hours) in the Stage of Change Approach
  • Consultation with organizations that support parents and early educators
  • Assessment tool: Stage of Change Scale for Early Education and Care 2.0
  • Stage of Change Professional Manual

What professionals say about the Stage of Change Approach

“[Learning these techniques] has been like a bonus, a pay raise.”
-Parent home visitor

“As a mentor working with child care providers, it was difficult to help many providers make program changes…the Stage of Change Scale helped me understand where the provider was coming from and what I needed to do to help her improve. That saved me a lot of time and frustration.”
-Child care mentor
